there 我们知道是表示"某事物存在或发生"，例如：
Is there any milk left?
还有牛奶吗？

再来看一个《新概念英语》3的第二课里的一句话：
It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.
但是，恐怕每到1点钟，它总是敲13下，对此我已无能为力。
So there was nothing much Atticus could do for his clients except be present at their departure.
阿蒂克斯帮不了他的委托人什么忙，只好在他们上路的时候陪在现场。

从这两个句子可以看出，当要表达"某人对某人或某事未能为力"时，我们可以用there is/was nothing sb can/could do about sth/for sb 来表达。
与there有关的口语短语：
there it is/there they are:原来它/他们在这儿
There you are. I've been looking for you.
原来你在这，我一直在找你。
be there for sb:（在某人身边）随时提供帮助
That's what I loved about my father—he was always there for me.
这就是我爱我父亲的原因—在我需要的时候他总是在我身边。
