黄龙玉最初人称。它有着田黄般的颜色、翡翠的硬度，硬度好、透度高、色彩鲜艳丰富。由于其产在龙陵，又以黄色为主色，故最终得名为黄龙玉。目前，从鉴赏角度可分为“原生黄龙玉”和“雕件黄龙玉”两种。
黄龙玉主要产自云南省保山市龙陵县小黑山自然保护区及周边的苏帕河流域，距离缅甸翡翠产区非常近，同属于亚欧板块和印度洋板块相互挤压而成的滇缅宝玉石成矿带。

黄龙玉是2004年在云南龙陵被发现的一种新玉种。其主色调为黄、红两色，兼有羊脂白、青白、黑、灰、绿等色。有“黄如金、红如血、白如冰、乌如墨”之称。具体说：黄的有金黄、蜜黄、蛋黄、鸡油黄、橘黄、枇杷黄等深浅不一的黄色。红的有鸡血红、朱砂红、猪肝红、玫瑰红、浅红、水红等；白的有雪白、冰白等。2011年2月，黄龙玉即被国家正式收录进入《国家珠宝玉石名录》，成为与翡翠、和田玉同等位置的天然玉石。
