梨园 Pear Garden

The Pear Garden is another name for opera troupe in ancient China because Tang Ming Emperor (the year 685–762) used the pear garden as a place for his training and rehearsal of song and dance. Later, the word gradually evolved into a synonym for singing and dancing group.

梨园是古代中国对戏曲班子的别称。因为唐明皇(685年–762年)曾将梨园作为他训练和排练歌舞的场所,后来这个词就逐渐演变成歌舞班子的代名词。

The Pear Garden was originally a place for the emperors of the Tang Dynasty to play, holding activities including tug-of-war and playing ball. It was an orchard in the imperial garden.

梨园原本是唐朝皇帝游乐的地方,举行的活动包括拔河、打球等。

是皇帝禁苑中的果木园圃。

During the Kaiyuan years of Emperor Xuanzong, he used it as a place to teach song and dance . Moreover, a large number of outstanding music and dance performers have been cultivated here, which has had a profound influence in history.

唐玄宗开元年间,把梨园作为教授练习歌舞的地方,而且在这里培养出了大批优秀的音乐舞蹈表演人才,在历史上产生了深远的影响。

The opera troupe of later generations often called itself "Pear Garden", and the opera artists were called "Pear Garden disciples".

后世的戏曲班社常以“梨园”为其代称,戏曲艺人称“梨园弟子”。

唐玄宗自作新曲名曰“道调法曲”,曾选伶人三百人在禁院梨园中歌舞,“声有误者,帝必觉而正之”,《霓裳羽衣曲》曾在梨园里表演。
