whether和if引导名词性从句，虽然汉语都翻译成了“是否”，但实际上意思不完全相同，whether表示两个选择，而if表示两个或两个以上的选择。
whether可以引导主语从句，但是if不行，比如：Whether he will come is not decided. 这里不能使用if引导主语从句。但如果用it做形式主语，也可以用if引导主语从句，比如：It doesn’t matter if he will come.
whether和if都可以引导做动词宾语的宾语从句，经常是在ask、wonder，know的否定之后，比如：I don’t know whether/if he will come. 但如果是know的肯定，虽然后面都可以用whether和if，但意思发生了改变，比如：Let me know whether you need help. 请告诉我你是否需要帮助。Let me know if you need help. 如果你需要帮助，请告诉我。前者whether引导宾语从句，后者if引导条件状语从句。
但如果是做介词的宾语，只能用whether来引导宾语从句，比如：It depends on whether we can come together as a nation. 这取决于我们能否作为一个国家团结起来。另外whether后可以紧跟or not，但是if不可以，比如：We're debating whether or not he knew of the situation. 我们在争论他是否知道情况。不过如果or not不是紧跟引导词的时候，whether和if都可以，比如：We’re debating whether/if he knew of the situation or not.
whether可以引导表语从句，if不可以。比如：Her worry is whether he is all right. 她担心的是他是否安好。
同位语从句中，一般用whether去引导，比如：It raises the question whether such deals are worth doing in the first place. 这就提出了一个问题，这类交易是否值得首先进行。
为避免出错，一般来讲，引导条件状语从句用if，表达两个选择的时候用whether。
