Following his appointment in September 2019,Vice-Chancellor Charlie Jeffery began to develop a strategy for the Universityfor the next ten years. Consultation with staff and students began in October2019.
Based on those conversations, our new Visionfor York provides a framework to think about what it means to be York and howwe, as a community, can work together to deliver our aims as we look ahead to2030.

Origins of the University 大学的起源
While petitions were drawn up as early as 1617,permission to establish a university in York was not granted until 1960. The development of the University and its vision was headed by Baron Jamesof Rusholme, the university's first Vice-Chancellor.
With Heslington Hall and The King's Manor as theprimary venues, the University opened its doors in October 1963 to 230students and 28 staff.

1960s expansion 20世纪60年代扩张
In 1964, work began to expand the Universitycampus to the marshy land around Heslington Hall. The developmentincluded landscaped parkland with a central man-made lake, innovative coveredwalkways, and the many CLASP buildings seen around campus.
By the end of the decade (and on schedule), theUniversity of York's campus included five colleges, three laboratories, CentralHall, the JB Morrell Library, the sports hall and the Sir Jack Lyons ConcertHall. Undergraduate enrolment had increased to 2500 students.

To maintain its position as one of the topuniversities in the world, the University must upgrade and expand itscampus. In addition to improvements to existing facilities, theUniversity is expanding to Heslington East.
Major improvements of the existing Heslingtoncampus include the refurbishment of the JB Morrell Library and the constructionof the Berrick Saul and Centre for Immunology and Infection buildings.

The King's Manor 国王庄园
The King's Manor, one of historic York's most attractiveand unusual sites, is enjoying a renaissance which is both physical andintellectual.
As the city-centre premises of the University ofYork, the King's Manor has a sure place in the future. The staff ofArchaeology, Medieval Studies and Eighteenth Century Studies have built upunparalleled reputations through innovative teaching and world-leadingresearch, characteristics which have become the hallmark of the University.
And this group of largely Grade I medievalbuildings is a vivid evocation of the past. Originally the Abbot's House of StMary's Abbey, the King's Manor served the Tudors and Stuarts as a seat ofgovernment, becoming residences in the 18th century and a school in the 19th.The history of the King's Manor weaves a continuous thread in the history ofYork since medieval times.

The Quiet Place 寂静所
The Quiet Place is set aside as an area ofstillness and quiet, which can be used for the purpose of reflection,meditation, prayer, reading and contemplative walking.
There are four elements to the Quiet Place: theouter lawn area and alcove seat, an enclosed garden area, a lower room, whichis available for individual use, and an upper room which can be booked bygroups or individuals.
Anyone using the Quiet Place or the surroundingarea is asked to do so in a manner that respects the purpose for which it isdesignated and to refrain from activities that will disturb the peace of othersor the symbolic stillness of the immediate environment.

Our Heslington campus is located on over 200 acresof parkland centred around substantial lakes.
The University is is famous for its abundance ofwildfowl, but also hosts a diverse range of other wildlife. A bird sanctuaryhas been established at the southern end of the lake.
