How do kids learn English words?
英语国家的小孩子怎么学新词？就像我们学语文一样，他们也有英语课本，通过课文学单词：
- Textbook: 课本
- Passage: 课文
他们也会有词汇功课，老师布置作业让学生回去查字典，找近义词、反义词甚至造句：
- Vocabulary assignments: 词汇功课
- Look up in the dictionary: 查字典
- Antonyms: 反义词
- Synonyms: 近义词，同义词
- Construct sentences: 造句
How do adult native speakers learn new words?
成年的英语母语者也会不认识某些英语单词，他们也会不断学习，不过没有人手把手教，只能从日常生活中主动获取：
- Many adults learn new words through reading. 成年人学新词主要靠阅读。
- They would see a new word and infer the meaning from the context. 他们读到一个新词，然后根据上下文来推断这个词是什么意思。
别沉迷于背单词而忘了运用于正确的语境：
- Don't just memorize vocabulary lists. 不要单纯去对着单词表死记硬背。
- They don't give you the context. 这样没有语境。
- You might know the meaning of the word without retaining or internalizing it. 这样就算知道了意思，也不会用。
- Vocabulary words are the building blocks of your language ability. But don't be obsessed with just memorizing vocabulary. 虽然词汇非常重要，是学语言的基础，但是千万别迷失在单纯背单词这件事上。
- It's more useful to know how to use 50 words than to memorize 100. 会用50个词比能背出100个词更有意义。
What you read matters
选择什么来阅读很重要，以下几个原则可以参考：
- Read things you're interested in: 读你自己感兴趣的内容
- Find high-frequency content: 找到使用频率高的内容
- Act within your means: 要量力而行
如果阅读的东西你不感兴趣，词汇量又不符合你的水平（看一篇要查80%的单词，会打乱你学习的连贯性），平时用到的可能性又比较小，那阅读的收效会非常低。所以不一定要一开始就去啃经典小说或者严肃的报纸，要更广泛地阅读：
- Define reading in broader terms: 广泛定义阅读
Check American news portals.
谁说上网不能学习的？逛国外的网站，边逛边学地道英语：
- News portals: 新闻门户网站
同时还能了解时事：
- Stay updated in current affairs/events: 了解时事
Listen to American podcasts.
听英文播客也是一个获取新单词的绝佳方式：
- Listening to podcasts: 听播客
美国国家公共电台（NPR）有很多好节目：
- On Point: NPR旗下一个每日更新的新闻节目
- It covers a wide range of topics. 它涉及的主题非常广。
- Natural expressions: 自然的表达方式
Keep a notebook.
Jenny 上学的时候会随身带一本笔记本，把每天接触的新词记下来：
- Notebook: 笔记本
- Write down each word: 把每个词记下来
不光要记单词，也要记语境：
- Write down the sentence where the new word was used: 记下那个新词出现在什么句子里
